Going to work is a daily hassle, considering the large crowds and fellow commuters to compete with, just to find a way into the trains or buses. Despite all this, public transport is still a cheaper, faster, and preferred way of commuting to work.

YouGov’s latest research on public transport etiquette reveals traits people find to be the most annoying about their fellow travellers. This research includes data from over 9,000 public transport users in Asia Pacific, sharing what they hoped to avoid on their journey.

Coughing or sneezing without covering your mouth

More than half of the users surveyed (52%) revealed that commuting with passengers who do not cover their mouth when they cough or sneeze is the most annoying trait to them.

Poor personal hygiene

51% of the respondents cited seeing passengers with poor personal hygiene is something that ticks them off. Interestingly, Thai commuters are the least concerned about personal hygiene (35%) while close to seven in 10 (69%) of those in the Philippines are highly concerned with poor personal hygiene.

Putting feet on the seats

Coming in third on the list, 38% of those surveyed citing that witnessing passengers putting their feet on the seats, is one of the most annoying behaviours they have encountered.

Digging deeper, older travellers, especially those aged above 55 years old, are more likely to be annoyed by passengers talking loudly on their phones (42%) citing this as one of their top three most irritating experiences. On the other hand, just 33% of Generation Z (16 to 24 years old) felt the same way.

Residents of Hong Kong are nearly twice (21%) as likely to be annoyed by hearing loud music coming from fellow commuters’ mobiles as compared to their regional counterparts (11%).
