The new year has finally arrived, and with that the resolutions. In addition to personal goals with regards to relationships, living situation, or health, many people start the year with new hopes, dreams, and intentions for their professional life.
To find out what those intentions might be, a recent CareerBuilder survey asked 3,411 US workers across industries about their resolutions for 2017. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the top resolution workers said they’re making for the office is a financial one, with 49% of respondents saying they will save more of their pay (up from 38% last year).
Other common resolutions are:
- Be less stressed: 38%.
- Get a raise or promotion: 30%
- Eat healthier at work: 28%
- Learn something new (take more courses, training, seminars): 26%
Similar to last year, 22% of workers said they are planning to change jobs in 2017. “A new year makes many people set their sights on job hunting”, said Rosemary Haefner, chief human resources officer for CareerBuilder.
“To keep your top workers, you need to keep a pulse on what they’re seeking. For example, poll your employees from time to time to learn more about their goals and motivations and how they want to be treated.”
Putting Haefner’s advice into practice, the survey also asked workers what extra perks would make them more willing to join or stay with a company. The most popular responses included:
- Half-day Fridays: 40%
- On-site fitness center: 27%
- Being able to wear jeans: 23%
- Daily catered lunches: 22%
- My own office: 22%
Depending on the details, an employee’s New Year’s resolutions can have a significant impact on their conduct at work. Although CareerBuilder’s survey can help to provide some insight into what might be currently motivating your staff, your team members are not necessarily represented by the survey’s respondents.
As such, it might be helpful to conduct your own mini survey in the office. Or better yet, take the time to sit down with every employee to discuss their aspirations for the year.
