Despite Singapore’s upper-hand as a competitive economy, young Singaporean talent are desperate to work and live overseas.
According to a survey by JobStreet, 88% of Singaporeans ages between 23 and 40 intend to work abroad in the near future.
Of them, 23% are “actively searching” for work overseas, while the other 60% are considering it “at some point in their career”.
In terms of how long they want to stay overseas, 78% said they would return home within five years. Their biggest reason for wanting to move overseas was to enhance their employability with international exposure (34%).
While Southeast Asia was a big draw card in general as a preferred location for Singaporeans, 27% would most like to move to Australia.
Around 20% of Singaporeans would like to move to Europe, followed by 14% to the US and 9% to New Zealand.
Of those who said they wanted a career abroad, the biggest thing holding them back at present is family commitments.
Other reasons included better remuneration packages, job opportunities and political stability here in Singapore.
