Having plants dotted throughout your office does much, much more for your employees’ well-being than simply looking pretty and livening the place up.
According to a number of new studies which tested the effect of plants and nature on worker productivity, going green can have multiple benefits on your staff’s cognitive functions.
One study conducted earlier this year found employees sitting at desks with flowers or plants showed higher attention levels than those sitting at an empty desk. This was also true for employees surrounded by inanimate objects.
Ruth K. Raanaas of the Norwegian University of Life Sciences, who collaborated on this study, told Fast Companythat establishing more plants in the office is a simple and easy way to help boost productivity and keep them happy.
“Most people spend a large proportion of their life at work, so even small effects may have great practical significance when aggregated over employees and time of employment.”
Another study by researchers at the University of Exeter also found plants aid in employee concentration, and can help increase staff well-being by 47%.
Allowing staff to help make design decisions in the office also helps increase creativity by 45% and boost productivity by 38%, The Daily Mail reported.
“This gives company managers a real incentive to share control of office space with their staff and create meaningful, less didactic and more grown up space,” psychologist Dr Craig Knight from the University of Exeter told DM.
