Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong has issued the Writ of Election for the Presidential Election, the first one to be reserved for candidates from the Malay community.

This decision is owing to the adoption of the hiatus-triggered model, which cites that if Singapore has not had a President from a particular community for five consecutive terms, the next term will be reserved for a President from that community.

Regarding this decision, employers need to make note of the following:

  1. Nomination Day will be on 13 September, where candidates who wish to be nominated must submit the required documentation, not later than 9 September 2017 (Saturday), 1 pm.
  2. If more than one candidate stands nominated on Nomination Day, the Returning Officer will declare 23 September 2017 (Saturday) to be Polling Day.
  3. Under the law, Polling Day at any Presidential election shall be a public holiday. Every employer shall, on Polling Day, allow every elector in his employ a reasonable period of time for voting.
  4. Entitlements and pay for public holidays in Singapore: http://bit.ly/PublicHolidaySG
