More than half (56%) of 400 local employers are not confident about the market in 2014.
According to a survey by JobStreet.com, this is a 14% drop from last year, and the report suggested the sentiment is a result of candidates browsing for jobs, but only applying for those which offer “compelling benefits”.
A separate survey from JobStreet.com also found 58% of 100 Singaporean employers are expecting to increase or maintain their headcount this year, a 5% increase from 2013.
A third of employers also reported they will need more than 10 additional headcounts this year, up from 16% last year.
The industries which reported the highest intent to hire in 2014 were construction, hospitality, manufacturing and trade.
Just over half (55%) of the employers surveyed said they are looking to hire junior level candidates with less than four years of experience, 28% intent to hire those at a supervisory or professional level, 12% will be hiring at a managerial level while the rest will be recruiting graduates.
The survey also found employers’ biggest recruitment challenge this year to be “the widening gap between jobs availability and willing manpower to fill those vacancies”.
