LinkedIn reveals most overused HR jargon in Hong Kong

Much is written about the role of HR professionals in the recruitment process. Articles on the best interview questions to ask, the best times to meet with candidates, or on tell-tale signs your interviewee is lying.

With such a strong focus on the HR professional as a recruiter, it seems we sometimes forget the tables can be turned and that those working in HR have career goals and aspirations just like everyone else.

For those HR professionals looking to move companies, move up, or simply on the lookout for potential opportunities, having an up to date LinkedIn profile is a good place to start. To help you stand out from the crowd, LinkedIn has released a list of Hong Kong’s HR professionals’ top ten buzzwords for 2017.

Hong Kong’s HR professionals’ top ten buzzwords for 2017 are:

  1. Specialised
  2. Leadership
  3. Focused
  4. Strategic
  5. Experienced
  6. Expert
  7. Passionate
  8. Responsible
  9. Multinational
  10. Track-record

Commenting on the list in a press release, Roger Pua, senior director, corporate communications, Asia Pacific, LinkedIn, said: “While buzzwords may be an easier way to describe your accomplishments and skills, they may not be effective or credible in communicating why you’re the best person for the job –  especially when everyone is using the same words.”

While it’s possible you are in fact a specialised expert passionate about your multinational track-record, try to find a different way to phrase it. Even better, provide short examples of accomplishments or situations that demonstrate your skills without having to label them.

“Identify a key objective you addressed, describing the actions you took and the skills you used. Wrap up with a sentence or two on the positive outcome you had on the business,” LinkedIn’s experts advise.
