It’s a dog eat dog world, and sometimes you have to play dirty to get ahead.

While we’re not advising you to become that dreaded toxic employee or boss, being greedy, lustful, and filled with wrath and envy could actually work in your favour.

Yes, according to an article originally published on Forbes, the seven deadly sins may be just what you need to kick your career up a notch.

Pride, for example, could help you better manage rejection or instil confidence in you to get to where you want to be in your career. Make sure you’re constantly doing work you can be proud of and remain in the line of sight of senior managers so you’re first in mind when a promotion or new job opportunity presents itself.

However, too much pride and you’ll see yourself on the wrong side of the fence. Don’t get too cocky or self-involved, and remember that at the end of the day, you still need your team members working by your side.

Rather than letting problems at work get to you and bottling up your emotions or sweeping them under the rug, redirect that wrath towards work. Use the frustrations you’re feeling as a driver to get to where you want to be, rather than taking it out on someone or something else.

Being a sloth could also have its hidden benefits. Not everyone thrives in a nine-to-five work culture, and with more companies providing flexible working options, it is easier to work during periods where you’re at your most productive.

Instead of wasting your downtime, spend it recharging, or working on projects which inspire you to make sure your mind remains creative and innovative.

Lust, when applied correctly to your professional psyche, can also work to your advantage. At the end of the day, humans are still ultimately driven by primal instinct and urges – something the Forbes article suggests bosses of the vice industry have understood.

By recognising what truly drives the people you work with – be it clients, shareholders or colleagues – you will be able to provide them with exactly what they need, making you a valuable team player.
