Employers are looking for candidates with personality and drive, rather than those who display the right skills set.

This was the finding presented by Hyper Island in its latest Tomorrow’s Most Wanted report, which canvassed responses over 500 global leaders and professionals in countries including The Netherlands, Singapore and the UK.

According to the study, 78% of respondents indicated “personality” as the most desirable quality in a candidate, followed by cultural alignment (53%) and skills set (39%).

A closer look found respondents listing drive (14%), creativity (12%) and an open mind (11%) as the specific personality traits they were on the look out for.

“What we found most compelling about this research is how clearly it highlights that personality, not competence, is the determining factor of who’s going to get the most attractive jobs among tomorrow’s recruits,” Johanna Frelin, Hyper Island CEO, said.

“Also, there is a growing desire for talent with a unique combination of skill and flexibility – people who can collaborate, adapt quickly and are enjoyable company, but also have the drive to get things done.”

She added those traits point to a personality which is “essential for businesses operating in an ever changing digital landscape”, making specific competence less important.

When it comes to the biggest talent challenge respondents are expecting to face in the future, finding, attracting, keeping and developing people came up on tops, with 20% highlighting that as their top concern.
