Would you donate your annual leave to a colleague in need?

We’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again – the French do a lot of things right when it comes to the working environment.

Aside from having some of the most flexible working hours in the world, as well as extremely supportive annual and parental leave laws, French workers now have a new law which allows employees to transfer their annual leave to someone in need.

Parliament has passed a law which lets workers give their paid leave to colleagues with seriously ill children.

The bill was inspired by the real life events of a French man, whose colleague donated 170 days worth of paid leave while his son battled cancer.

MP Paul Salen presented the bill after a worker in his constituency, Christophe Germain, was given days off by colleagues to look after his 11-year-old son, Mathys. Sadly, Mathys passed away in 2011.

According to a Telegraph article, Germain attended the Senate hearing where the right to donate leave to colleagues was extended to the public sector. This has been allowed in some private companies for some time.

The progressive new law begs the question of other businesses and employees – would you donate your leave to a colleague if they were in need?
