Cathay Pacific lets go of IT workers

Despite Swire Pacific Chairman John Slosar saying the group’s aviation unit, Cathay Pacific Airways, had no plans to layoff staff, the airline has terminated 17 members from the IT department.

The job cuts came into effect immediate and included managers and department heads, with some earning monthly salary of more than HK$60,000 a month, according to an article from the Oriental Daily.

It was reported that director information technology Joe Locandro had already resigned.

A spokesperson from the airline explained in the article that the job cuts has nothing to do with reducing cost. ” We will always, as usual, review and replace operationally critical jobs in IT and other departments. We will continue to invest in pivotal projects such as data centre technology, crew management system and many others,” he said in a written reply to enquiry from Human Resources.

The objective of re-alignment is to better focus our IT department on increasing productivity and reliability, strengthening in-house capabilities and optimising the management of suppliers.  The spokesperson also said the 17 staff who lost their jobs are welcome to apply for other available jobs in the company.

In other news, The Kowloon Motor Bus Company has fired 10 people from their IT department, as told to Singtao Daily by employees.

The article stated the company had orchestrated a number of job cuts since Roger Lee took over as managing director in 2014.

Last December, a number of long-serving employees, including those working at the bus depot and engineering department, were put on ‘voluntary” retirement plans.
