Bizarre HR: Stand at your desk to get fit

Standing up at your desk might have been a form of punishment in school, but it could be the secret to staying healthy at the office – and living longer.

Not only does standing up for an extra three hours a day at work help burn off 3.6kg of fat a year, it will also help those feeling tired behind their desks.

“People are sitting down at work, then sitting in the car and then sitting down in front of the television. Your metabolic rate crashes to an absolute minimum. It isn’t natural. Humans are designed to stand up and keep moving,” John Buckley, an exercise scientist from Chester University, told BBC News.

He said standing rather than sitting also reduces the risk of obesity and improves circulation, Daily Mail reported, adding standing for three hours will burn about 144 calories.

A separate Australian survey in March 2012 also found sitting for too long increases a person’s risk of dying within a few years despite being physically active.

The study found adults who sat for more than 11 hours a day were 40% more likely to die within the next three years as compared to those who sat less than four hours a day.
