As HR professionals and hiring managers, we all know that hiring the perfect candidate takes time. But, take too long and you might create a negative impression on the potential employee.
In fact, Randstad’s recent Candidate Expectations survey revealed that 54% of Malaysians said they develop a negative impression of the prospective employer if the hiring process takes longer than expected – slightly above the global average of 53%.
Singaporeans and Hongkongers shared the sentiment, with 53% of Singaporeans, and 52% of Hongkongers saying they develop a negative impression of the prospective employer if the hiring process takes longer than expected.
Surveying 2,000 respondents across Malaysia, Singapore, and Hong Kong, Randstad further revealed that other factors which affect job seekers’ impression of a prospective employer include the company’s overall reputation (41% in Malaysia, 43% in Singapore, 38% in Hong Kong, and 40% across all three markets), communication level throughout the process (34% in Malaysia, 41% in Singapore, 36% in Hong Kong, and 37% across all three markets), the degree of personal human interaction (31% in Malaysia, 33% in Singapore, 33% in Hong Kong, and 32% across all three markets), and the recruiter/hiring manager (31% in Malaysia, 43% in Singapore, 42% in Hong Kong, and 39% across all three markets).
The bottom three considerations that impact the job seeker’s experience were workplace environment (27% in Malaysia, 23% in Singapore, 28% in Hong Kong, and 26% across all three markets), online presence (16% in Malaysia, 13% in Singapore, 18% in Hong Kong, and 16% across all three markets) , and the use of innovative, emerging technologies (8% in Malaysia, 4% in Singapore, 6% in Hong Kong, and 6% across all three markets).

As such, employers should adopt a needs-based approach towards recruitment by placing the job seekers’ career objectives and goals first.
Employers are encouraged to have a care for personal touch through regular updates and face-to-face consultations with job seekers, while leveraging HR technology to speed up the hiring and selection process. This can help reduce job seekers’ stress and anxiety throughout the recruitment process.”
