5 simple ways to boost productivity

The key to productivity is to produce a largest amount of work for the time and effort being put into it.

But after a report revealed Singaporeans clock up some of the longest working hours in the developed world, we realised we might not actually be very good at remaining productive. So, we thought of a few ways you can make the most out of you and your staff’s working hours.

Here are 5 tips to keep in mind to ensure maximum productivity in your office:

1. Get organised

Being organised will cut down on the time you waste trying to look for documents on your desk or computer. I personally like to keep important information in clearly labelled folders on my desktop. As for your desk, don’t be afraid to trash old documents. A good rule of thumb is if you haven’t referred to something in three months, it’s safe to assume you probably won’t ever need it again.

Whether you prefer your desk messy or clean, being organised is a completely different issue. In fact, research has found that both types are just as good in their own way.

2. Write it down

As long as a task is pending, note it down and turn it into a checklist. It’s only when work starts to pile up that you begin to realise how easy it is to forget. Use post-it notes to keep your lists compact and concise, and stick them somewhere you’ll be able to see them all day.

3. Lunch in

Don’t get me wrong, going out for lunch is a healthy way to take a break from work and decompress in the middle of the day. However, there are times we sacrifice our productivity unnecessarily. A recent study found workers who go out for lunch do not perform as well when they get back to their desks. For maximum performance, pack lunch, or buy in and eat at your desk.

4. Don’t stick to the chair

While the previous point may encourage you to stay at your desk for longer, don’t forget that spending too much time seated can do major damage to your health. It doesn’t hurt to take a quick stroll away from your desk, or get off your seat to stretch a little. Movement is the key to maintaining your cognitive performance.

5. Put away your phone

If you are one of those people who need to be surgically removed from your phone, there’s a high chance you are often distracted at work. Just a single beep can cause you to lose your train of thought, distracting not only yourself, but also your colleagues.

Keep your phone on silent mode, face down or even completely out of sight, especially during a peak working period.
