We all love to be inspired in our work, and we all love music. So we’ve combined the two to supply you with a list of excellent work jams.
Music has been shown to increase productivity at work, but before you glue your headphones to your ears, make sure you follow these 5 golden rules (the last thing we want is you to be completely distracted from the task at hand.)
But, if you’re free to bust out some tunes, these are some of the best. Click on the images for links to the full song.
NB: Excuse my lack of jazz or classical music. I know research says they’re some of the best genres to listen to while working, but I just can’t do it.
1. Pharrell Williams – Happy
It’s basically impossible to feel lousy while listening to this song. It’s my number one tune if I’m having an average day.
2. The Flying Lizards – Money (That’s What I Want)
Sing this in your head before that all-important client meeting to get you pumped up about doing business. Don’t sing it out loud, though – I’m pretty sure they won’t appreciate you singing “I want your money”.
3. Shapeshifter – Bring Change
This is me introducing you to some old school New Zealand drum & bass. Bust out this tune for a feel-good boost, or to get you in the right frame of mind for trying something different or out of your comfort zone.
4. The Mynabirds – Body of Work
Some indie pop to get your feet tapping and hands clapping.
Best line: “Yesterday happened just exactly as it did, you can’t go back and undo.”
5. The Bangles – Manic Monday
Just because sometimes your Mondays are manic. Plus, this song was written by Prince, so it gets a thumbs up from me.
6. Talib Kweli – Get By
This catchy song serves two purposes: To remind you that you really don’t have it that bad, and to give you a kick up the butt to stick to your New Year’s resolutions. Or any resolutions, for that matter.
Best line: “This morning I woke up, feeling brand new and I jumped up, feeling my highs and my lows, and my soul and my goals, just to stop smoking and stop drinking, I’ve been thinking I’ve got my reasons just to get by.”
7. Fat Freddy’s Drop – Wandering Eye
Some more Kiwi beats for your playlists (come on, you knew I was gonna do this).
Fat Freddy’s have been around for ages now, but their tunes never fail to pick you up with their style of dub, reggae and soul.
8. The Doors – Break on Through (To the Other Side)
Listen to this song before you need to make a tough decision – you know, hiring someone, firing someone, disciplining someone. You can’t “run and hide” from the big decisions that need to be made!
9. Thievery Corporation – Lebanese Blonde
This trip-hop/dub song is as relaxing as it is enjoyable. Play it when you need to take a break at work, or when you’re picturing yourself on a beach instead of behind your desk.
10. Flight of the Conchords – Business Time
Last Kiwi tune (promise). If you don’t know who FOTC are then you’ve been living under a rock. This hilarious song is one of their best. Just listen, and then laugh about it with your colleagues (and then go and watch every single one of their music videos. Do it.)
Best line: “When I’m down to by socks you know it’s time for business, that’s why they call them business socks.”
