1 in 5 have faced some form of discrimination in Singapore’s workplaces

Singapore has strict regulations and follow-up action to keep workplace discrimination in check, thus a low rate of discrimination is evident.

That said, workplace discrimination is still a reality, according to JobStreet’s Gender Equality Survey, which found just over one in five (23%) of employees in Singapore have experienced some form of discrimination at the workplace.

Of the 474 respondents, 52% were men and 48% were women.

Among those who admitted to having faced some form of discrimination, 45% deemed the extent of their experiences ‘severe’.

Employees in the hotel and hospitality industry (44%), as well as the construction, building and engineering (41%) industry reported more cases of discrimination, than other sectors.

Gender mix perceptions across sectors

Based on the survey findings, 73% of the respondents in the engineering service industries indicated that there is a fair mix of genders in their industry (mechanical, electrical and others). On the other hand, the perception in both education and medical healthcare sectors were women-dominated workforces.
